Grammatics, York Fibbers

Grammatics are one of those Leeds bands.

Grammatics are one of those Leeds bands. They list their influences as the likes of Blur, Radiohead, Nirvana. They’re are one of those Leeds bands. Except for when they’re not. And that’s when they actually play.

Haunting and mesmerising, they have an ethereal sound and a marmite nature. And they don’t care whether you’re a fan or not. Their set is self-indulgent and pretentious… luckily, the audience are too. Lapping up every minute, bodies emerge from the darkest corners of the York basement to bask in Owen Brinley’s stagelight.

Set highlights include ‘Swan Song’ and ‘Murderer’, tracks which show the full spectrum of their musical talent. And there is a lot of it.

Vocals from the schools of Bellamy and Yorke mixed with Stockholm Symphony Orchestra standard cello, flawless bass and seemless drumming, and you’d be quite hard pressed to make a bad sound. Nevertheless, Grammatics seem intent on trying everything. Experimenting with their sound and flicking from one indie-rock related genre to the next, their sets are enough to leave you exhausted if nothing else.

If we didn’t like them so much, we’d hate them. Definitely a band to check out over the Leeds/Reading weekend.
