Reading & Leeds 2014

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis bring the fun to Reading 2014

Who really gets away with playing their biggest hit twice in a flurry of pyro and smoke, while not sounding like a complete pillock?

Alright, it’s true. Maybe billing Macklemore & Ryan Lewis second from top of the Reading & Leeds line-up wasn’t exactly what anyone was expecting. Maybe they weren’t meant to work sandwiched in-between punk stalwarts Blink 182 and UK rock hopes You Me At Six. But maybe they do anyway.

Opening with a bang - quite literally, there are fireworks within the opening few moments - there’s elation in the crowd, an indescribable sense of fun in the air. This isn’t about Grammy Awards, or the purity of rap; Macklemore is here to put on a show, and a show he puts on.

From the kitsch groove of ‘Thrift Shop’ to genuine sentiments of ‘Same Love’, the rapper proves himself to be no man of one trade throughout his time on stage. He transforms form artist to entertainer instantly, and all with the flair of someone who’s got much more behind them than just one album. Above all though, he provides a sense of fun which usually seems to be missed.

Granted, maybe donning a wig and sparkly cape for a rendition of ‘And We Danced’ isn’t quite the coolest thing to do, but he - alongside his producer, full live band and a team of dancers - just don’t seem to care, and frankly, it’s bloody brilliant. After all, who really gets away with playing their biggest hit twice in a flurry of pyro and smoke, while not sounding like a complete pillock? If tonight’s crowd are anything to believe: this guy.
