Pale Seas, Sebright Arms, London

Monday night saw Pale Seas perform the final show of their short but very sweet UK tour. Having criss-crossed their way across the country for a week of intense gigging, the Seas settled in the dark and dingy basement of The Sebright Arms in Hackney.

Based in London, the talented bunch create what they describe quite perfectly as ‘dream folk’. The group consists of charismatic frontman Jacob Scott, drummer and delicately voiced backing singer Zeelah Isabella Anstey, swishy-haired Graham Poole on electric guitar and Matthew Bishop slapping de bass.

The awesome foursome treat us to a delightful collection of both released and unreleased material, including lovely single ‘Something Or Nothing’ and B-Side ‘Amour’. With their beautiful harmonies, plenty of oohs and ahhs, and an abundance of general skills, they’re on to a winner. Live, Pale Seas are heavier than you might expect. Loud guitar and bass shake alongside Jacob’s acoustic, ‘Evil Is Always One Step Behind’; even ending in an Explosions In The Sky style instrumental that worked brilliantly.

Recently signed to Fear & Records (who brought us the likes of Rolo Tomassi, Emmy The Great and I Was a Cub Scout), they’re on a good roster, and I for one am looking forward to seeing what the future brings for them. Pale Seas are quite simply lovely. You’d be pushed not to like them!
