Sound Issues Plight Connan Mockasin’s Glastonbury Set
Despite substantial delays and an impromptu Elvis cover, Connan Mockasin plays an electrifying - if brief - set on the Park Stage
Issues during soundcheck and an extended hunt for a new amplifier might’ve delayed Connan Mockasin’s performance on Glastonbury’s Park Stage, but Mockasin’s impromptu cover of Elvis’ ‘I Can’t Help Falling In Love With You’ as well as a “schoobee-doo” riddled slowdance jam just about saved the day. Eventually, though, proceedings were fully underway.
Dressed in a bizarre fur-topped ensemble vaguely reminiscent of a Wes Anderson character, the band stick largely to the big hits in their remaining time. “How many more times have we got?” asks Mockasin- meaning to say songs and giggling at himself. “Look at that!” he says repeatedly, pointing towards a thundercloud behind the crowd, while unbuttoning his shirt. “It’s beautiful. It’s fantastic. Keep safe.” He then mumbles something about having a lot of problems today - presumably referring to the repeated issues soundchecking
Still, Connan Mockasin, yelping and noodling his way through psychadelic, warping guitar sprawl-outs while seated casually on the edge of the Park Stage and grinning to himself like a small child on the loose in Toys R’ Us, does not seem fazed. ‘Forever Dolphin Love’ speeds up into a crashing quadruple-paced finale, leading to an onstage thunderstorm of flashing lights and rumbling crunches to match the sky. “Thank you very much” growls Mockaskin, brandishing a peace sign and a yellow beaker, before departing all too soon after a short and wonderfully strange set.

Hair we go, hair we go, hair we go: Soft Hair
Connan Mockasin, and Sam Dust of Late of the Pier and LA Priest fame have made an album under the name Soft Hair. As you’d imagine, it’s a bit weird.
