We Are Losers - Sunset Song / Cheerleader

Five minutes of straightforward lo-fi pop that goes straight for the jugular.

Say hello to the single of the summer. This gloriously immediate double A-side comes from Dublin-based hot prospects We Are Losers - three members are ex-Super Extra Bonus Party and one is currently in Grand Pocket Orchestra; that’s one hell of a combination - and consists of five minutes of straightforward lo-fi pop that goes straight for the jugular. The concept of messing around seems to be completely foreign to this band; these songs are direct, deceptively simple, and loaded with charm.

‘Sunset Song’ is reminiscent of earlier Two Door Cinema Club material filtered through a bubblegum-pop haze. It lasts only two minutes but will remain in the listener’s head for days afterwards, and they will be thankful for it. We’ve been playing it for quite a while now and are still not sick of it. It may seem slight but has serious longevity, and the same goes for the single’s flipside, ‘Cheerleader’. It contains only four chords and conforms to a verse-chorus structure, but is best described as musical Prozac; in other words, you’re not likely to come across a more uplifting song in the next few months. By the band’s own admission they may see themselves as losers, but they’re definitely on to a winner with these two songs.
