New music guide The Neu Bulletin (13th August 2014)
Your daily new music guide, featuring Troves and Slow Magic.
The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Some of the music you’ll like, some of it you won’t. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular. Most of these are Bandcamp finds, big ups from readers or cheeky submissions that pop out of the inbox.
Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery and follow our ‘Listen’-tag for everything new music related.
THE GIG:Slow Magic — Brooklyn Bowl
Future-leaning producer Slow Magic is bringing his forthcoming LP ‘How to Run Away’ to London this week. It’s a rare trip to these shores from a musician that doesn’t tend to exist in any one location. His songs transverse boundaries, the giddy electronic beings that they are. ‘Hold Still’ (above) is the most recent, exciting example of his craft.
THE BIG NEU THING:Troves — Youth In Decay
Brighton band Troves are the latest in a long line of post-CHVRCHES giddy synth pop promises to emerge out of a big crowd. ‘Youth In Decay’ is something special. It captures shiny accessibility and a nervous energy all at once. House keys reverberate alongside a booming mantra of “you’ve got me manic, I’m manic from all the madness,” by which point everything really is manic, teeming with energy. There’s depth, sadness, everything required in a massive synth pop track - ‘Youth In Decay’ couldn’t tick any more boxes even if it wound up scribbling some of its own.
