It’s almost a formality that when a band reaches a certain point in their career they move to the capital. In Childhood’s case, however, it seems that moving away from their native London has helped expand their musical horizons.
While still studying away from the big smoke at Nottingham University Leo Dobson and Ben Hopcraft (who become a five piece when performing live) are now producing some of the most heartfelt, melodic pop gems around.
‘Blue Velvet’ is a hugely emotive, nostalgic track. The fuzzy, retrospective guitars and emotive lyrics grab your attention almost instantly. Other tracks like ‘Semester’ and ‘Paper Wave’ follow suit, both sharing the same overwhelming likability and charm.
It’s not just the Internet that’s taking note either, as the band recently headed into the studio to re-record ‘Blue Velvet’ and ‘Semester’ ahead of a single release scheduled for the back end of the year.
Maybe you wouldn’t expect this level of song writing craftsmanship to come from a couple of undergraduates, but Childhood are without doubt outlining their potential as one of the UK’s most promising bands.
