News DIY Weekly: Neu’s Recommendations, 21st October

Weekly’s new music recommendations include Rosie Lowe, Naomi Pilgrim and Mutual Benefit.

Every week, Neu offers up lots of new band recommendations for DIY Weekly, which you might’ve heard became this big, FREE publication. The freshest faces and most exciting names make their first steps, ranging from thrashy guitar-wielders to sample-adoring producers. Here’s a round-up of this week’s Neu tips - grab your copy of DIY Weekly here.

Mutual Benefit

Jordan Lee

looks primed to become another ‘new’ name with a good half a dozen records in their back-pocket already. He’s a product of a DIY culture, never stopping for a second when delivering sweet, ambitious violin-led pieces. His latest ‘Love’s Crushing Diamond’ album consists of two, 15-minute songs, but it’s in the more succinct ‘Advanced Falconry’ which he looks set to take off with.

Naomi Pilgrim

She calls herself a ‘whistleblower for peace’, and given the intense sonic blast of Naomi Pilgrim’s debut track ‘No Gun’, you’d deem her capable of just about anything. The Sweden via Barbados musician colours chart-ready pop in crazed, Pollock-style shades. It’s a scatterbrained approach that’s going to send her skywards.

Rosie Lowe

First appearing on a track alongside Lil Silva, Rosie Lowe’s since recruited Kwes and The Invisible’s Dave Okumu to help produced latest track ‘Me & Your Ghost’. Laced in oddball quirks, instruments skittering out of control, Lowe’s dark, lurking vocals aren’t born out the ordinary tree, which makes the whole thing even more exciting.

Broods

Auckland duo BROODS recorded their debut track alongside Lorde producer Joel Little, after working with him since 2011. Caleb & Georgia Nott have stood away from the spotlight, then, but considering how fully-formed the glossy debut ‘Bridges’ is, it’s a plan that’s come together perfectly.
