Neu DIY Weekly: Neu’s Recommendations, 7th October
Listen to Neu’s essential tips for DIY Weekly, featuring Attu and Huskies.
Every week, Neu offers up four new band recommendations for DIY Weekly. The freshest faces and most exciting names make their first steps, ranging from thrashy guitar-wielders to sample-adoring producers. Here’s a round-up of this week’s Neu tips - grab your copy of DIY Weekly here.
Attu
Beginning as the project of one Stefan Antoinette, Attu’s since expanded into a four-piece. On latest single ‘Don’t Sleep’ - previewing an EP out in 2014 - warm synths bubble under the surface, as giddy guitars fall under Stefan’s softly-softly vocals. The North London four-piece have the potential to go arena-ready big, but they’re taking things one excitable step at a time.
Shivum Sharma
Shivum Sharma possesses one heck of a voice. Combining fellow world-beater-of-a-voice Amy Winehouse with the lurking darkness of Fever Ray as influences is a pretty clear indication of what you’re getting with ‘Flicker’. Soulful to the point of no return, it’s a demo that’s likely sent every label in the country into one hell of a hot fuss.
Lupa
15 year old Sydney resident Lupa’s music has been - and will continue to be - compared to Grimes. But there’s something in the way she makes predominantly electronic, gadgety things seem like they’ve come straight out of some pagan cave of organic sounds. In that sense, Imogen Jones is already doing things musicians twice her age can’t muster.
Huskies
For folks who get narked at bands aiming big and writing songs catered beyond tiny cliques, this probably isn’t going to rub them up the right way. Huskies are a Nottingham group of good looking guys making songs for teens. New song ‘Beach’ is Swim Deep gone even sweeter, like adding an extra flake to a 99p ice cream.
