The avenues to take in which to get your music noticed are no longer as black and white as they used to be. Soundcloud or Bandcamp accounts rarely stand out amongst a cast of thousands and being at the bottom of a local gig’s bill gives you the slimmest of chances of being noticed by a nearby A&R. One recent recipient of a First On profile, Willis Earl Beal, was discovered by being on the front of Found’ Magazine (a collection of bits and bobs found in the street by passers by).
The as yet anonymous Evian Christ found his/her early fame through a Youtube channel. Not completely out of the ordinary, and you guess that some influential ruffian out there emailed Dummy Mag (the first to discover Evian’s stuff) to help spread word. But, like Earl Beal, it’s a slightly different means of being discovered.
Evian Christ’s music has all the required credentials for spreading itself wide across the blogosphere. One of their tracks samples Grouper and its the R’n’B-affiliated production style is very much in tow with recent mixtape sensation Clams Casino. Check out ‘Thrown Like Jacks’ for the clearest indication of why this newcomer has so much appeal.
