Julia Brown recently rose from the ashes of Teen Suicide. It marks the five members’ first attempt at a more serious and mature project. Frontman Sam Ray issued this protective message as an introduction to his new band, but he needn’t have posted such a statement. We reckon that most people will instantly fall for the rich melodies, the loving craft that this Maryland band possess.
Although it’s early days in their existence they’ve already released their debut album ‘to be close to you’, which was nurtured well before Teen Suicides’ demise. It is a lo-fi release in the truest sense. The songs were recorded straight onto tape, an approach that has captured an assortment of background sounds (coughs and friends mutterings), which in turn light up the pauses between songs. It goes hand-in-hand with the sleight, intimate songs that radiate warmth with every bittersweet touch. Everything Julia Brown capture conveys charm and can’t help but make them an extremely loveable group.
Stream ‘library’, from the ‘to be close to you’ album, out now.
