Don’t let the above comparison put you off too much. Kins really aren’t inclined to sound like any other band out there, mainly because within the past 12 months their sound has swayed from an anthemic quality to one encompassing a minimal pop glow. Far beyond the band’s masterfully titled ‘Dancing Back & Forth, Covered In Whipped Cream’ EP, latest track ‘Break Ties’ caught the eye - it sports a minimalism which the likes of Jessie Ware and Coventry’s Shelter Point appear to be bringing to the fore. Yes, these are sparkly pop songs at their core, but the surrounding elements aren’t keen on stealing the show.
Kins began in Melbourne as the project of Thomas Savage. Since then almost everything has changed; a few members, location (the band now reside in Brighton) and more pointedly, the sound. This is a group who are yet to settle into their skin - ‘We Are No Tribe, I Am No Leader’ is a sweet busking acoustic number which even Fionn Regan would want to put to his name. And then there’s the below song, ‘Break Ties’, which just goes to highlight the group’s versatility. The next step is anyone’s guess but we’re keeping our fingers crossed that they stick to this more minimal, restricted approach.
