News Los Porcos: ‘We Realised We’d Been Working Separately On The Same Project’

Sam Cornforth gets the first word from a new band bringing disco back to the forefront.

70’s disco is back in all its glittery mirrorball glory. Daft Punk may have the stolen the headlines with the groovy ‘Get Lucky’, but Los Porcos dropped two funky jams of their own last month. The six minute long ‘Do You Wanna Live?’ is particularly impressive; an irresistible debut offering that peaks with a dramatic, purposefully out-of-place guitar solo. This entertaining project boasts members from WU LYF, FAMY and Profondo - together, they’re to be central to a disco revival.

We quizzed Los Porcos about how the members all happened to meet, their apparent pig obsession and how they’re working towards an album.

Could you introduce yourselves and how you all happened to meet?
Los Porcos is Bruce & Arthur Yates, Joseph Manning, Evans Kati, Ian Endfield, Thomas ‘Tommy’ Edwards and Thomas ‘Lung’ McLung. We all met with the exception of Ian at Corsica Studios and it was love at first sight. Then we went on a UK summer tour with WU LYF and Famy, which Ian joined us on and we all fell in love all over again.

When did you decide to start making music together?
Last September we realised we’d unwittingly been working separately on the same project. We were saying that we all get on so well, that we should start a band. Bruce said he wanted to make disco music and Joe and Lung had already recorded ‘Do You Wanna Live?’ so it all fell into place.

What is the obsession with pigs?
Porco Rosso.

The funky disco sounds on your first output is quite different to the other projects that various members have been involved it. Why did you decide to attach yourselves to this style of music?
It’s a lot of fun to make and then listen to. It’s an inclusive kind of music that seven people can have in common. But we feel that music really misses that element at the moment. We are hoping that Daft Punk will inject it back into mainstream music because we miss it purely as fans of that style.

We can’t interview you without talking about that guitar solo in ‘Do You Wanna Live?’ who played it and what where you going for?
Lung played it. No one ever knows what he’s going for, but it was intended to be amusing, to be a bit out of place.

What can we expect from your live debut next week at Salon Club in London?
We are taking over a club and turning it into Jones’ Disco, real 70s nightclub vibes. Los Porcos are Jones’ house band.

Looking a bit further into future, have you got any more material or shows planned?
There’s a lot of material that will become an LP. We want to release 12’ singles. We have another show in France planned for May, and we are hoping to do some more over the summer.
