Neu MØ
Some say Karen Marie Ørsted is a pop superstar in waiting - Neu reckons she’s already started.
Name
: Karen Marie Ørsted
Based: Copenhagen
Listen: ‘Pilgrim’
Similar to: DENA, Robyn
Few debut tracks are as striking as ‘Pilgrim’, MØ’s inaugural effort. Karen Marie Ørsted puts convention to one side, as production blends the kind of horn section you might stumble across in a Gwen Stefani track, with what sounds distinctly like a glockenspiel section and the slightest little synth twists and turns. Some instruments appear for a mere split-second; guitar ticks and bounces leaving nothing but a faint trace.
So if there isn’t enough to marvel in with ‘Pilgrim’’s backdrop, there’s true cause for celebration in Ørsted’s stunning vocal track. Like Karin Dreijer minus effects, or Charli XCX with a Scandi-twist, she spits curse-filled lines against the squeaky pop soundtrack, and it all sounds deliciously twisted.
