Festival Preview Øya Festival
The sprawling four-day event features Beck, Run The Jewels and Courtney Barnett.
The sprawling four-day Øya Festival (five if you include the initial ‘Club Tuesday’ local showcase gigs across the city) is jam-packed with variety, and promises to provide something for everyone in its gorgeous Tøyen Park setting.
Wednesday looks set to host a ton of this summer’s hottest acts, with proven giants such as Chic and Nile Rodgers, The War on Drugs and Caribou all on site to deliver their essential sets. DIY favourites Years & Years, Courtney Barnett and Shamir also make appearances, with Belle & Sebastian, Låpsley, Foxygen, Songhoy Blues and even In Flames also contributing everything from laid-back indie rock to death metal. Who knows how the day will turn out?
Thursday isn’t letting up easy, either. Where else other than Øya can you catch the magnitude of Sunn O))) at half four in the afternoon, or Ride before the sun goes down? Run The Jewels and Tyler, The Creator are also on hand to provide pre-evening warm-ups, with Father John Misty paving the way towards performances from Flying Lotus and Florence + the Machine, both whom currently have excellent reputations when it comes to putting on pure spectacles.
Jenny Hval leads the way for Norwegian acts on Friday, and her talents are complimented by early sets from Laura Marling and Holly Herndon before Hookworms arrive to truly decimate those hangovers. With Future Islands, alt-J, iLoveMakkonen, SOPHIE and Beck all following in tow, Friday looks set to provide one of the strongest line-ups of the festival and is bound to leave everyone reeling by the time Saturday morning rolls around - especially with late night sets from Ought and Kero Kero Bonito in store.
Thankfully, Saturday appears ready to wind things down nicely. Two Norwegian acts - Emilie Nicolas and Sunsanne Sundfør - are ready to showcase the country’s ever-expanding talent, with Natalie Prass, Ibibio Sound Machine and Benjamin Booker also getting in on some of that calmer, more down-to-earth action. Knowing Norway, there’ll probably even be time to grab a decent bit of grub and a few killer coffees in-between all of this live music nonsense too. Those lucky enough to go along are in store for nothing short of magic.
