Superfood x DIY Superfood’s on the road playlist

When they first emerged, Superfood were almost self-contained by others in a half-grunge, half-Britpop bubble (that’s before even bringing B-town into the equation). As it turns out, they don’t just dose up on Blur. Their early demos were made from a hip-hop beats sample package, and on their debut album they’re promising elements of ‘Odelay’-era Beck to creep into the system.

The best way to get to know the depths of a band’s taste? Get them to make a playlist. These guys have been on the road a lot this year. A tour with Wolf Alice and Gengahr saw them roaming round the UK for a whole month in a brilliant triple-bill. When they’re tucked into their van, the playlist is pretty diverse. We allowed Dom Ganderton to give us a run-through of the tracks. Listen to the playlist here.

“We started off with hip-hop, which has been in the van a lot. Especially Cypress Hill. We go through Wu-Tang, some Beck, and then a really top Cornershop song. Black Moth Super Rainbow - we’ve only heard of them recently even though it’s an album that came out in 2007. Throughout the whole of this album they use a really weird flute sound. Then there’s the new Caribou track, ‘Can’t Do Without You’. We liven up the party a bit with a big old funk tune from Zapp. The Queens of the Stone Age track is a curveball, a wildcard. That’s Carl’s choice. ‘Wake Up and Make Love With Me’ is the best Ian Dury song. Then it’s about going home with two massive tracks. It’s lights on, everyone walking out the door. That sums up what we’re listening to at the moment; all 70s rock and some 90s hip-hop.”
