News The Making Of: San Cisco - Fred Astaire

San Cisco’s new single ‘Fred Astaire’ - taken from their forthcoming self-titled debut - was released earlier this month, with an accompanying video featuring both a bit of dancing and a dog, which you can watch above. Scarlett Stevens (drums / vocals) talks us through the making of the video.

We had a director drop out at the last minute and needed someone to help fulfill our vision of what we wanted the clip to be. With one week’s worth of logistical planning and one dance rehearsal, and in the peak of summer, we dragged ourselves away from our time off in the beautiful Australian South West to make video clip number 7.

Instead of reincarnating the character of Fred Astaire, we got dancers from all over WA to showcase their different dancing styles, from ballroom to 1940s and flamenco. [Guitarist] Jordi and I improvised most of our moves. I am particularly uncoordinated, whereas Jordi is generally pretty good at busting a move and looking natural and uninhibited.

With the dancers we tried to hint that there’s always a bigger fish who’s better than you and ready to rub it in your face, which definitely relates to the self-deprecating message of the song. Thus, Jordi and I get pushed aside by the professionals before finding each other in the song’s finale.

Although the clip is not stuck in one particular era, we wanted it to be nostalgic which was highly dependent on the setting and outfits. The Midland Town Hall was one of the first built in WA. I jumped on the opportunity to wear my 70s satin pantsuit and the boys suited up for the occasion.

It’s my favorite clip that we’ve made to date. It feels like there is a lot of our individual personalities in there which can be rare when you are acting out someone else’s vision for a video clip. And we even snuck a dog into the last scene!

San Cisco’s new single ‘Fred Astaire’ is out now via Columbia Records.
