THE GIG
Mykki Blanco - London, Village Underground
No Mykki show is the same as the one previous. Riding on the coattails of her ‘Betty Rubble: The Initiation’ EP, Blanco’s going to be showing London exactly what it’s missing. New York’s hip-hop scene is in rude health, with Mykki, Angel Haze among countless others. But she still has plenty to prove.
THE SONG
Stalling - MCO
MCO by Stalling
This debut track from Tallahassee’s Stalling is intentionally off-beat and out of focus in the beginning. Percussion takes its time to get going, the vocals begin all detuned and worrisome. It stalls, quite aptly. Confidence soon sets in, though, and ‘MCO’, rough-edged gem that it is, starts to charm. It’s a song that thrives in its imperfection, coming off like one prolonged, creative burst that strikes gold when the going gets tough.
OTHER NEU BUSINESS
Noble Oak - I’m Lost
This one cropped up at the end of last week, passing us by. Which is a shame, as it would’ve served as a nice breezy companion to the blissed-out weekend. ‘I’m Lost’, at heart, is a downbeat, sombre work, a sense of isolation served up in one recording. But being ‘lost’ can also be a blessing in disguise, a chance to step out of the comfort zone and explore otherwise unseen beauty. That’s most definitely what the Canadian producer achieves here, pushing boundaries and seeing the world for the first time in the process.
