New music guide The Neu Bulletin (10th June 2015)
DIY’s new music tips, featuring Sinead Harnett, Afterbloom and Mutes.
The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular. Most of these are Bandcamp finds, big ups from readers or cheeky submissions that pop out the inbox.
Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery and follow our ‘Listen’-tag for everything new music related.
THE GIG: Sinead Harnett
Sinead Harnett’s spent the past few months transitioning from pop prospect to actual hit-maker. Guest spots from Disclosure tracks onwards have given her a platform, now she’s using it. Tonight she headlines East London haunt Oslo, with Nottingham newcomer Ady Suleiman in support.

Earlier this year, Yak frontman Oli Burslem described his band’s sound as “beans music” - basic stuff that still gets the wheel turning. Nothing overly-complicated, nothing too fancy, but it works. We’re starting to believe “beans music” is an actual thing. A band like Birmingham’s AFTERBLOOM don’t claim to be changing the world, but their riff-charged routine is still enough to send thousands into a frenzy. Instead of chin stroking, over-analysing and getting bogged down in deep thinking, perhaps it’s time to embrace simplicity.

Birmingham band Mutes capture a no-bullshit sense of collapse. On their debut cassette ‘Starvation Age’, they bring beauty into thrash, and everything’s about painting progression in new shades. ‘Holy Terror’ gives nods to Deerhunter in extracting gold out of every, gently lifting note. What beings as a constant headrush soon unfolds into something gentler but more exciting. The debut tape is out 29th June via Oxford label One Note Forever.
