New music guide The Neu Bulletin (10th October 2014)
DIY picks out new music from JUCE, BAY. and South London’s Matagot.
The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Some of the music you’ll like, some of it you won’t. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular. Most of these are Bandcamp finds, big ups from readers or cheeky submissions that pop out of the inbox.
Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery and follow our ‘Listen’-tag for everything new music related.
THE GIG:JUCE — London, The Macbeth
Ahead of their inevitable 2015-centric ascent, London pop trio JUCE play one of their first headline gigs at The Macbeth tonight. Riding on the back of ‘Call You Out’, they’ve been readying a debut album since signing a deal with Island. Witness the next big girl band before they break big.
THE BIG NEU THING:BAY. — MAN MADE (DIY Premiere)
Elusive London act BAY.’s off-kilter pop shares plenty in common with Liverpudlians Outfit in making the simple sound brilliantly obtuse. What makes these guys stand out is their ability to apply distant, foggy hip-hop samples and dreamy guitar lines at the same time. ‘MAN MADE’ is knowingly robotic, built out of structure, finite parts, breakable at an instant. It also happens to be their finest track to date - a hushed, slightly creepy message of weirdo lust.
Tomorrow night (11th October), BAY. play London Birthdays w/ The Night VI and My Panda Shall Fly for Oxjam’s Dalston takeover.
OTHER NEU BUSINESS:Matagot — Teeth
“When you cut open brains, it’s so hard to close them again” - South London’s Matagot speak perfect, sinister sense on ‘Teeth’, a track that extracts all the evil out of everyday existence and applies it to playful pop. They’re set to feature on a forthcoming NX Records compilation that also showcases new music from Semi Precious and the incredible Bunki. It’s out 17th November on NX / Accidental.
