THE GIG
Wall, 9Mary - London, Bush Hall
Two of the UK’s most exciting songwriters root themselves in a suitably beautiful venue tonight. We profiled support act 9Mary last year when she’d only a handful of videos with an eerie-like quality to her name. Flo Morrissey, who’s taking her time with this inevitable rise, spins conventional folk on its sorry head. WALL’s in this month’s magazine, meanwhile, on the back of her excellent new ‘Shoestring’ EP.
THE SONG
Maple & Beach - After The Ice Age
Older Tides EP by Maple & Beech
There’s hitting the jackpot and then there’s going one step further. The opening track on Minnesota group Maple & Beach’s new EP is fine on its own, a gorgeous welcoming in of a track. But instead of relying on basic melodies and the tune itself, the members add odd flourishes, unique touches, like a wild saxophone section and inventive percussion. Going the extra mile pays off on ‘After The Ice Age’.
OTHER NEU BUSINESS
Young Fathers - I Heard
I heard, through many people, that Young Fathers were one of the standout stories of this year’s SXSW festival. Every band who attended probably has someone claiming that very fact, but on the basis of ‘I Heard’, the opening track on the band’s new EP on Anticon, folk weren’t fibbing. Lines about Science being ‘eerie’ might make little to no sense, but it’s the bewildering, head-spinning production that seizes the agenda. ‘Inside I’m feeling dirty’, goes the chorus. Me too, Young Fathers. Me too.
