THE GIG
MR MR - London, XOYO
They’re no longer the shadowy duo with a pair of sneakers for a promo photo that we used to know. MS MR are a big deal. A couple of pop stars playing big stages. Ahead of a flight to Austin, Texas for that festival, they play London’s XOYO tonight.
THE SONG
GEMS - Never Age
Another lot who’ll be gracing many a stage at this year’s SXSW (we’re not jealous - honest), DC duo GEMS, forever Neu favourites, release a 400 edition of their debut 7’ through Turntable Kitchen this month. The existing ‘All I Ever’ links arms with the previously unreleased but totally engrossing ‘Never Age’. It’s a glorious swim through the mediterranean, minus the jellyfish stings and taste of salt. All those escapists always forget the disadvantages of a long swim in unknown territory. Blame GEMS.
OTHER NEU BUSINESS
Gentlemen - Late Nacht
All it requires is a little bit of sophistication, a touch of restraint, and there you have it: A band succeeding in music countless others have hurriedly failed at perfecting. The semi slo-mo waltz of ‘Late Nacht’ - one of three existing songs from London band Gentlemen - is a horn-addled, bold beast of a track. Talk about a first impression. These guys are like George Clooney turning up to an audition to be a handsome so-and-so in a coffee advert. Once you see it, you know it’s meant to be.
