Jagwar Ma - London, Rough Trade East
Two beloved Aussies (or three, depending on who you ask) launch their debut album ‘Howlin” at Rough Trade this evening. It’s easily one of the past weeks’ standout efforts, and live, the various dance elements at work on record shuffle their way to the forefront and all inhibitions are let loose.
THE SONG
Ayla - YOURS
YOURS (DEMO) by Ayla
Plenty of songs might commence bright-eyed, before simmering out into something vaguely close to nothingness. This does the opposite. Ayla - not sure if she’s French or not, the statement on her Bandcamp suggests as much - gets better and better as this song progresses, swinging from one glorious branch to the other without a care in the world. She gains confidence, chanting by ‘YOURS” frenzied climax. And it sounds stunning.

A potentially overbearing clash of guitar-on-guitar might ward off casual listeners, but ‘Alive’ is laced in invention and idea.
