New music guide The Neu Bulletin (12th September 2014)
Years & Years and DEATHS feature in today’s batch of new music tips.
The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Some of the music you’ll like, some of it you won’t. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular. Most of these are Bandcamp finds, big ups from readers or cheeky submissions that pop out of the inbox.
Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery and follow our ‘Listen’-tag for everything new music related.
THE GIG:Years & Years, Laura Doggett support SOHN — London, Shepherd’s Bush Empire
Tonight marks Vienna producer SOHN’s biggest headline UK show to date, and he’s topping it off by inviting in two exciting new names to join the celebrations. There’s Years & Years, readying themselves for a big 2015, and Laura Doggett, whose early signs point to a bright future.
THE BIG NEU THING:The Hanged Man — First Time Dreaming
New on London punk label PNKSLM is The Hanged Man, a project started by Rebecka Rolfart (Those Dancing Days, Vulkano). Ditching woozy pop for something more psychedelic and up-in-the-clouds, there’s also a sinister edge to new track ‘First Time Dreaming’. An accompanying video, up above, only enhances the idea that escapism can manifest itself into different, often deadly forms.
OTHER NEU BUSINESS:DEATHS — Lonewolves
Hailing from Berlin, packing enough mystery to send the serial fact-checkers crazy, DEATHS is a fascinating new collective arriving with pristine, ghostly pop in ‘Lonewolves’. Think the bitter taste of Active Child, mixed with spacious songwriting by way of Deptford Goth. Beautiful to the extreme, it also lends itself to pure, unrelenting darkness.
