New music guide The Neu Bulletin (13th July 2015)
DIY’s new music tips - delivered every day. Featuring Raury, LUWUM and Hidden Charms.
The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular. Most of these are Bandcamp finds, big ups from readers or cheeky submissions that pop out the inbox.
Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery and follow our ‘Listen’-tag for everything new music related.
THE GIG: Raury
Raury was widely-tipped as a star for 2015, but he doesn’t look set to take the standard calendar route of playing shows, releasing an album, and repeat. Debut “project” ‘Indigo Child’ hinted at the Atlanta talent’s star potential, and he’s since taken on a more politicised edge that brings darkness to barmy, genre-bending recordings.
London, Village Underground
Jesse W. Miller sounds like a roommate from a different world. His early recordings give off an intimacy that you’d only expect to find if you walked in on him trying to write a rough version of a song, without realising anyone else was around. ‘A Weird Flash’ / ‘Making Up a Mood’ is honesty in his purest, most floating form. The two song release brings something new out of acoustic lulls, drifting without lacking a sense of purpose.

Hidden Charms were recommended to us by Bulletin favourites The Yetis, and both acts from different sides of the Atlantic share a classically-inspired twist on rock ’n roll. Simple, rollicking guitar rock and Jagger-nodding showmanship rules the roost for these Londoners, their ‘Dreaming of Another Girl’ song giving indication of a nostalgia-ridden band on a mission. They join Yak for a show at Langham Working Men’s Club on Saturday 18th July.
