New music guide The Neu Bulletin (13th March 2015)

DIY’s new music tips, featuring Kid Wave, Phoebe Ryan and The Red Cords.

The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular. Most of these are Bandcamp finds, big ups from readers or cheeky submissions that pop out of the inbox.

Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery and follow our ‘Listen’-tag for everything new music related.

THE GIG:
Kid Wave, Hooton Tennis Club & more

London, Shacklewell Arms (Heavenly All Dayer) - Sunday 15th March

This Sunday, beloved label Heavenly Recordings celebrates its rich run of form with an exciting 5-band showcase at The Shacklewell Arms. Exciting names Kid Wave and Hooton Tennis Club are on the bill. More established Heavenly staples are there too, but shhh, we’re not allowed to mention those guys yet.

THE BIG NEU THING:
Phoebe Ryan - Dead

‘Dead’ or alive, LA-residing pop newcomer Phoebe Ryan’s going to take over. Texas-born, her early tracks blend a Chromatics-meets-College synth glow with simple, deadpan lyrics that give into fate. “I’ve been a wreck,” she sings on her latest, serene cut, self-dismissal clashing heads with brutal honesty. This is how it’s done.

OTHER NEU BUSINESS:
The Red Cords - Scratch It Off

DIY-till-we-die label Art Is Hard Records is taking things to an extreme. From today, they’re hand cutting their own records, shunning suppliers by doing every little thing themselves. First up is The Red Cords, a Cornwall group bringing boredom into the spotlight through a thrashing lack of restraint. ‘Scratch It Off’ is simple as it gets - the complete opposite of, y’know, trying to make actual records by hands.
