New music guide The Neu Bulletin (15th July 2014)

Chance the Rapper and Danny are in DIY’s batch of new music tips.

The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Some of the music you’ll like, some of it you won’t. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular. Most of these are Bandcamp finds, big ups from readers or cheeky submissions that pop out of the inbox.

Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery and follow our ‘Listen’-tag for everything new music related.

THE GIG:
Chance the Rapper - London, The Forum

Chance the Rapper is already a really big deal, and this London Forum gig is also a massive deal, so placing this as Gig of the Day is a bit like preaching to the converted. But this is a (relatively) rare opportunity to see a genuine star before he winds up in gigantic arenas for the rest of his career.

THE BIG NEU THING:
DANNY - Coconut Oil

Sod the factor 30, ignore the nagging grains of sand that rub up between toes - pretend summer is this wonderful, generous season that just gives, gives, gives. Then imagine hitching up to a fanciful European sea resort with nothing but a towel and some shocking speedos. ‘Coconut Oil’ by DANNY is playing in the background by this point, a novel and quick-witted summer anthem that doesn’t fuck about, to be honest. It sings about being “tropical” in woozy, melancholic terms, and it’s as wonderful a sight as a horde of swan-shaped pedalos streaming across the shore. Here’s one for the heatwave.

OTHER NEU BUSINESS:
Grubs - Dec 15/ Gym Shame

Grubs is a new band spanning several UK cities and enough 16-25 railcards to warrant a life subscription. It consists of members from Joanna Gruesome, Trust Fund, plus former DIY deputy online editor Jake May. It’s a collection of tracks that snarls, seethes and charms in a brilliant routine, completely free of restraint. The second half stamps on treadmills, while its elder half is the kind that jolts into action without a second’s notice.
