New music guide The Neu Bulletin (16th April 2015)
DIY’s new music tips, featuring The Magic Gang, Users and Diamond Mind.
The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular. Most of these are Bandcamp finds, big ups from readers or cheeky submissions that pop out the inbox.
Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery and follow our ‘Listen’-tag for everything new music related.
THE GIG: The Magic Gang
Post-wooing thousands on the Wolf Alice tour, Brighton’s The Magic Gang celebrate the release of their debut single ‘No Fun’ / ‘Alright’ with a headline run across the UK. Tonight’s stopover sees the four-piece stuffing the capital with sky-reaching hooks.
London, The Shacklewell Arms
This was recommended yesterday by Tei Shi to Gorilla vs Bear, as part of a takeover, where she basically flooded the site with new music tips. Best of the bunch was Users, a group creating intimacy out of everyday observations, guitars going skywards in a similar way to recent Kurt Vile material. ‘Denmark’ is a globe-trotting dreamer, all eyes on the past.
THE BIG NEU THING:Users — Denmark
Diamond Mind’s ‘official bio’ is a winner. “Does Diamond Mind float? What will the community think? What really happens after rehearsal?” are some of the questions they pose as an introduction. But when it all boils down, the Edmonton group’s second release (‘Blank Tape’) is a melody-crammed, tongue-in-cheek take on dreamy pop. Wit is part and parcel of what they do, but let’s not forget those gigantic choruses.
