THE GIG
Boneyeards, Flamingods, Slowcoaches - London, The Shacklewell Arms
Grab your most hole-strewn clothes, it’s gonna be a grubby ride. FLAMES. BONES… COACHES. Three of the country’s most ferocious live acts combine; the tight-knit thrill of Boneyeards; the worldly wisdom of Flamingods and the unrelenting blast of Slowcoaches. Let’s go.
THE SONG
Hoopla Blue - Seams [DIY Premiere]
Back in February Neu cast an intrigued eye over Birmingham’s Hoopla Blue. ‘Holy Ghost’ was a rough-around-the-edges but mindbendingly promising recording. Shunning typical structure, it went the whole hog with wielding something oddball out of conventional character. ‘Seams’ is a clearer, more theatrical turn. The now defunct Grammatics would’ve been proud of this curtain call of a work, worthy of a standing ovation if ever a song was. ‘Seams’ takes things up a notch - DIY’s delighted to have the first play.
OTHER NEU BUSINESS
Laura Groves - Inky Sea
With a tentative release due on DEEK Recordings (Bullion, Nautic), Laura Groves’ ‘Inky Sea’ might take between now and its eventual release date to fully stomach. So many swift, surprising turns define ‘Inky Sea’ it’s hard to know where to look first. The video, too, with its archive footage and shrouded meanings, is a further distraction. When it all pieces together, it becomes a frightful thing, smarter than all the recent A-level recipients combined.
