New music guide The Neu Bulletin (16th December 2014)
DIY’s new music delivery, featuring Years & Years, Movienite and Laurel Wreath.
The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Some of the music you’ll like, some of it you won’t. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular. Most of these are Bandcamp finds, big ups from readers or cheeky submissions that pop out of the inbox.
Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery and follow our ‘Listen’-tag for everything new music related.
THE GIG: Kwabs and Years & Years — Ellie Goulding and Friends, London’s O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire
Tonight sees pop sensation Ellie Goulding hosting a night of non-stop music at Shepherd’s Bush Empire, in aid of the Streets of London charity. Raising awareness for homeless people in the capital, alongside Bastille and Band of Skulls, Neu favourites Kwabs and Years & Years are also set to make an appearance.
THE BIG NEU THING:Laurel Wreath
Brighton’s never stopped being a hotbed for exciting new music, but it’s reaching a serious high point in 2014, with the new year approaching. The Magic Gang and Demob Happy stand out in a bunch that’s already provided successes in The Wytches and Royal Blood. With Our Girl offering similar promise, there’s also Laurel Wreath, a new act from the Coast with spiralling guitar lines running through their veins. Similar to Swedish band Makthaverskan’s hysterical, emotion-led routine, this is reverb-lined to the extreme, but deep down there’s a bunch of very promising tracks.
OTHER NEU BUSINESS:Movienite — From Afar
The latest track from Gothenburg band Movienite is gorgeousness defined, a slicked back, eyes-in-the-back-of-the-head daydreamer that loses consciousness as it progresses. ‘From Afar’ has its hand leaning out the car window, taking in the car. Destined to close ever gig in emotional rejoice, it’s potentially the best thing these guys have put their name to so far.
