New music guide The Neu Bulletin (18th September 2014)

Oscar, Honne and The Yetis form a brilliant batch of new music tips.

The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Some of the music you’ll like, some of it you won’t. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular. Most of these are Bandcamp finds, big ups from readers or cheeky submissions that pop out of the inbox.

Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery and follow our ‘Listen’-tag for everything new music related.

THE GIG:
Oscar - London, Shacklewell Arms

There isn’t anyone out there quite like Oscar. Trained to sing like an X Factor winning champion, he’s shunned the easy route to make scrappy, hook-tastic bedroom pop of the highest order. Tonight’s free gig at Shacklewell Arms takes place in his usual hangs, but it won’t be long before Oscar’s trading places for big, arm-flailing crowds.

THE BIG NEU THING:
Honne - Baby Please

Honne are on a charm offensive. Debut track ‘Warm On a Cold Night’ was the ultimate antidote to lonely 2am listening sessions, giving intimacy a new lease of life. And b-side (B-SIDE, believe it or not) ‘Baby Please’ doesn’t hold back on wooing its way to the top. Gorgeous doesn’t cover it - every tiny fragment of this song belongs in the arms of a special someone.

Honne’s debut EP is out 22nd September on Super Recordings.

OTHER NEU BUSINESS:
The Yetis - Little Surfer Girl

There hasn’t been a song as instant and this wave-conquering since The Drum’s ‘Let’s Go Surfin’’. The faint rings of “O-BAMAAAA” still ring out from that mid-‘00s gem, and out step The Yetis to take up the baton. ‘Little Surfer Girl’ is ‘60s to the extreme, a beachcomber with attitude and enough hooks to lure in the 50mph gale winds required for a heady - probably quite dangerous - afternoon of surfing. No doubt about it, these guys probably don’t even surf - it’s the stuff they dream about that matters.
