News The Neu Bulletin (19th October 2012)

Neu previews Regal Safari’s Manchester show tonight - plus recommendations for Bear State and Wild Swim.

Neu’s got you covered for new music recommendations and nights out this week. Each day we’ll give you a choice gig, plus a selection of fresh artists to check out.

You wouldn’t want to spend a Friday night doing anything but immersing yourself in grand, absorbing electronica and crystallised, abstract guitar pop. G R E A T W A V E S and Regal Safari make for an unlikely but revelatory combination, as Manchester’s incoming audience look set to feast on their evocative, grandiose palettes of sound, all very distinct to, but ultimately complementing, one another.

Great Waves & Regal Safari play the Manchester Bunker, tonight.

THE SONG This Pair of Eyes - Single by Bear State
We’re not sure if Bear State claims itself to be a solo project or a big band get-together, but Caleb from the band has been excitedly messaging us ever since Neu first featured his project last week. “These guys from the UK posted about my music!” he told his Facebook followers. We were touched to be considered so cool. It’s not often this happens. But don’t think of this as a returning of the favour - new song ‘This Pair of Eyes’ is understated, nonchalant in approach, but delve deep and you find a track laced with drama and depth.

Wild Swim claim to be influenced by How To Dress Well, The xx and other such acts favouring a no-bones all-out emotional take on things, but when the opening tones of ‘Echo’ arrive you can only think of one direct comparison: Wild Beasts. It’s as if their subtle instrumentation has been pegged back even more, with electronic harmonies lining the centre of a dreamy, delightful debut single, all sunken and shy at first, before reaching a dramatic crescendo to conquer all others. It’s out 26th November through Believe Digital.
