THE GIG
Say Lou Lou support Hurts - Manchester, Academy 2

Scandi-pop sister act Say Lou Lou premiered their ‘Julian’ single on these very pages last week. They’ll doubtless be sporting that track, and other future hits, at this big-time show with current pop heavyweights Hurts.

THE SONG
Magia Negra - Something You Want
Something You Want by Magia Negra

The Bank Holiday weekend and its relative quiet makes for a good time to source songs that might otherwise go unnoticed. This Magia Negra track was released last week on Bandcamp, the Austin band’s rough-edged, expansive rock almost slipping under every poor sod’s radar. But ‘Something You Want’, coupled with ‘Bossa’, gives hope that Magia Negra won’t be lesser-knowns for much longer.

OTHER NEU BUSINESS
Sue Clyde - Chances
Chances by Sue Clyde

Any musician heading down the synth-pop is taking a big risk. It’s one of 2013’s biggest musical dilemmas: How do you make something glossy and big on hooks stand out in a huge, over saturated landscape of other musicians trying the same tactic? Maybe it’s the sheer novelty of being able to pay 15 Polish zlotys’ for this EP (the equivalent of £2 or so) for Sue Clyde’s debut EP, but we’d also pin our applause on the stunning production of this first work. Maja Ławicka’s vocals float beautifully over the semi-sinister synthetics, constructed by brothers Adam and Maciek Michalak. It’s terrifically dark, a real jolt of energy in a somewhat lagging genre.
