New music guide The Neu Bulletin (1st October 2014)
DIY’s batch of new music tips contains Raury, Fake Laugh and Blaue Blume.
The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Some of the music you’ll like, some of it you won’t. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular. Most of these are Bandcamp finds, big ups from readers or cheeky submissions that pop out of the inbox.
Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery and follow our ‘Listen’-tag for everything new music related.
THE GIG:Raury and Denai Moore support SBTRKT — Nottingham, Rock City
On his ‘Wonder Where We Land’ run of dates, SBTRKT’s bringing the relatively unknown guests on his record on tour. Raury’s the standout name, an Atlanta prodigy ready to take over in 2015 - Denai Moore has similar intention, and ‘The Light’ star announced her new EP yesterday. SBTRKT’s a specialist in picking out new talent before they break big - this is no exception.
THE BIG NEU THING:Blaue Blume — Live in Copenhagen (DIY Premiere)
Seeing Blaue Blume live is a special thing. The Danes have only made a handful of visits to the UK, but given the right setting their genre-hopping, beautiful routine takes over. At a recent Copenhagen performance, they explored the extremes of their spirited, falsetto-filled live capabilities. We’re premiering an eye-opening clip of exactly how it’s done - each member is directed towards another. There’s no hierarchy - it’s a face-off. There’s no other band around sounding remotely like Blaue Blume, and this video only cements the fact.
This October, Blaue Blume play the following dates: Kolding’s Pitshop (2nd), Odense’s Posten (3rd), Utrecht’s Nordic Delight (4th), Ja Ja Ja Berlin (9th), Aarhus’ Atlas (17th), Genk’s Glimps (12th November) and London’s Ja Ja Ja festival (14th November).
OTHER NEU BUSINESS:Fake Laugh — Freely EP
Each day in the Neu Bulletin we’re bigging up three different things, so it’s easy to get lost in the fog. But the latest EP from London musician Kamran Khan couldn’t come any more recommended. There hasn’t been a musician this side of the Atlantic mastering Mac DeMarco’s woozy, romantic and tongue-in-cheek style of songwriting quite like Khan, and Fake Laugh deserves to go far.
This Friday (3rd October), Fake Laugh, Oscar and Soph Nathan play a brilliant bill at London KPH.
