New music guide The Neu Bulletin (20th January 2015)

DIY looks ahead to tonight’s Hello 2015 gig in London, headlined by Oscar.

The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Some of the music you’ll like, some of it you won’t. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular. Most of these are Bandcamp finds, big ups from readers or cheeky submissions that pop out of the inbox.

Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery and follow our ‘Listen’-tag for everything new music related.

THE GIG:
Oscar, Chloe Black, Fossa, Black Honey (Hello 2015) - London, The Old Blue Last

Tonight, the sunshine-first pop of Oscar heads up a brilliant bill of four ace bands, falling as part of DIY’s ‘Hello 2015’ gigs. Last week Bloody Knees upped the carnage stakes to ridiculous levels - boring folk might want tonight to be slightly less feverish, but we’re not ruling anything out. Here’s a guide to every band playing.

Black Honey (On: 7.45pm)

Brighton’s Black Honey started things off by being dead mysterious. They handed out a phone number to go alongside promising debut tracks, and they texted “saucy” messages to anyone who had questions. Those WhatsApp days are over, with the four-piece taking to just their second ever London show.

Fossa (On: 8.15pm)

Fresh-faced Londoners packing softly-softly charmers, Fossa consists of four guys who pack whispered, hushed tones like they’re some kind of maverick boy’s choir. The gorgeous ‘Five Days’ (above) sits somewhere between Aquilo’s angelic pop and early Wild Beasts.

Chloe Black (On: 9.00pm)

No fucking around - Chloe Black wants to make outstanding pop before she dies (at 27, according to her premonitions) and she’s going a long way to achieving just that. 2014’s debut single put her name on the map - tonight she plays one of her very first UK shows.

Oscar (On: 10.00pm)

Attention’s been coming Oscar Scheller’s way for some time. For the past couple of years, the North Londoner’s been penning striking, baritone-led pop with hooks worthy of taking on the charts. New single ‘Daffodil Days’ is his brightest moment yet, arriving in hand with a new record deal with Wichita. Expect nothing short of a full-on party tonight.
