THE GIG
Traams - London, Shacklewell Arms
Launching their all-guns-blazing debut album ‘Grin’, TRAAMS deserve to be playing to crowds in their thousands. Instead they’ll likely settle to turning a couple of hundred crazed fans into sweaty monsters, before the rest of the weekend even has a say. Theo Verney supports.
THE SONG
MAS YSA - Why
‘Why”s a good question. WHY does Thomas Arsenault run from wistful croons worthy of Bon Iver’s approval, to maddening techno sections, to the kind of synth lines you’d get on Casio keyboard demos? WHY does this genre-hopping work? WHY hasn’t anyone thought of making music like this before? WHY isn’t there an album worth of this yet? Etc.
MAS YSA himself is well travelled, runs the bio. Which might explain how he so erratically hops from one sound to the next. He’s like a guy catching consecutive flights without getting done for a drugs-bust in Signapore customs. What a champ.
OTHER NEU BUSINESS
Marian Hill - Lovit
Philadelphia duo with cool running through their veins, Jeremy Lloyd and Samantha Gongol, take another ice-cold step towards future stardom with ‘Lovit’. Every clicked finger snaps normality in half, sending the system in hyperspace. It’s dreadfully self-aware, this track. But sometimes these things work for the better.
