THE GIG
Jamie Isaac, IYES, Moko, Kirk Spencer - Peckham, The Bussey Building

A beautiful venue in an area many are declaring a London-based hotspot of creative adventure - and cheap rent to boot - hosts four of the country’s most exciting new acts. Jamie Isaac’s taken a while out from the limelight, but alongside Brighton’s IYES, the ever-inventive Kirk Spencer and the intriguing Moko, this is a mighty line-up - the week’s best.

THE SONG
NORTH ARM - Quietly Lightly

I think you have to be in a certain frame of mind to make music like this. For something so unalterably lovely to come so completely naturally to a songwriter is quite the draw. Spunk Records are bringing out the first release from Newcastle, Australia resident Roderick Smith aka. NORTH ARM. He stumbled onto this gorgeous sound by sifting through old recordings from 2008 to 2010, and it’s all come together to form the debut ‘Thought Lines’ EP. ‘Quietly Lightly’ never gives up on the chase of something more beautiful, something beyond the analog sounds making up its recording. In the end, Smith achieves everything he set out to do.

OTHER NEU BUSINESS
Parks, Squares and Alleys - Youth

These guys are from Russia, their name is simple, observational, and their music is similarly rooted to an odd fascination of things other folk might consider boring. Nothing relents in a simple, structured guitar-meets-light-percussion setup, but ‘Youth’ still works its charm, winning you over on the basis of its sheer, wide-eyed sense of wonder.
