THE GIG
Moko, Law, The Night VI, Nudes - London, Old Blue Last, Free

The final ‘How June Is Now’ showcase, co-presented by Neu and The Old Blue Last, brings some of the newest, albeit most exciting, names around into one venue. Headliner Moko is a surefire bet on pushing experimental soul to more daring levels, while Edinburgh’s Law is right up there with peers Young Fathers in sporting an ability to slice convention in half. The Night VI are newly signed to Parlaphone, their debut track being one of the highlights of the past month, while London’s Nudes fledge a sensitive, synth-pop melodrama that’s another huge draw for tonight. And it’s free, and you can thank us later.

THE SONG
SALES - Renee
renee by SALES

Orlando, Florida’s SALES make nifty pop with laboured percussion and sticky acoustic hooks. It’s essentially built around two chords, is ‘Renee’, but the accompanying vocals build and build, adding a gorgeous glaze over the sparse simplicity. It’s a perfectly placed, gentle meeting ground between electronic production and sweet, sweeping folk.

OTHER NEU BUSINESS
Elastic Sleep - Anywhere

Cork five-piece Elastic Sleep do shoegaze the right way. Soul-drenching guitars aren’t the primary element. They provide a backing, but not a distracting one. The focus is on Muireann Levis’s vocals, which placed alongside the screeching background furore sound like sweet release from impending chaos. Light and dark, rough and clean, that’s how you find a compromise while still sounding out-of-this-world, bursting with energy.
