THE GIG
Jagwar Ma - London, Birthdays

Australia’s brightest export play a sold-out Birthdays. The band’s self-professed ‘Madchester’-channelling pop is far more than that. It’s inventive and laced in style, and the likes of ‘The Throw’ will stay in your head for weeks following on from the show.

THE SONG
The Birthday Kiss - Can You Keep A Secret?

Formed by Ben Siddall - who in the good old days could be found in The Lodger and can now be found on rhythm guitar for This Many Boyfriends - and vocalist Sarah Williams, The Birthday Kiss sees the pair ignore the geographic boundaries imposed by Siddall living in Leeds and Williams in London to create expertly crafted pop songs in the same sort of vein as Stuart Murdoch’s God Help The Girl project. At once fresh and evocative, it shows a songwriting nous at odds with a band still in its early, formative stages. [Gareth Ware]

OTHER NEU BUSINESS
BANKS. - Before I Ever Met You (SOHN Remix)

Back when he started out, I’m pretty sure SOHN went as far as putting a disclaimer on all of his emails firmly stating ‘I don’t have time for remixes.’ Put yourself in the shoes of any musician with a single in need of a remix, and you can understand why they all festered to get a little piece of the London via. Vienna producer. Still yet to play any live dates, the few remixes SOHN’s agreed to are high-profile and big steps forward. First he made Laura Mvula’s ‘Green Garden’ sound like the total opposite of standard-fare dinner party music and now he’s turned BANKS. already vibrant debut track into something ten times as heated and bright-eyed.
