New music guide The Neu Bulletin (26th October 2015)
DIY’s new music tips, featuring Peluché, DC Scribbla and Rodents.
The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular. Most of these are Bandcamp finds, big ups from readers or cheeky submissions that pop out the inbox.
Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery and follow our ‘Listen’-tag for everything new music related.
THE GIG:
Peluché (w/ Darwin Deez)
Oxford, O2 Academy
London trio Peluché could swing their aim in any direction. At this stage, they’ve showcased face-melting instrumentation with ‘The Guy With The Gammy Eye’, and more restrained jazz-nodding pop through ‘Sin’. They’re joining Darwin Deez on big academy dates this autumn - tonight it’s Oxford, and tomorrow they play London’s Islington Assembly Hall.
THE BIG NEU THING:
DC Scribbla
Few newcomers capture and contain the ever-changing glow of London like DC Scribbla. From the highs to lows, his ‘Popular Season’ collection is a wondrous look at the big smoke, flicking from childlike enthusiasm to mature confidence in a flash. ‘All I Ever Wanted’ is as smart a rapper’s opening gambit as they come, while ’98 Flows’ and ‘Wild’ show Scribbla has true variety running through his veins.
OTHER NEU BUSINESS:
Rodents - Calm Down
There’s a mucky, slightly regrettable aftertaste to Rodents’ ‘Calm Down’. Like stomaching too much beer and trying to rid the smell for days, or spilling coffee on the carpet and the stain never coming off, there’s a dirty grit that’ll drag you down. But that’s Rodents’ appeal. They leave their mark through grimy, quick-thinking guitar pop, like Parquet Courts if they forgot to wash for a week.
