New music guide The Neu Bulletin (27th June 2014)

DIY’s new music tips include Oscar, Body Cheetah and Tombo Crush.

The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Some of the music you’ll like, some of it you won’t. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular.

Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery.

THE WEEKEND’S BIG GIG:
Oscar, Junk, Grubs - London, The Old Blue Last

While Glastonbury sets the agenda with countless stages and new band-centric merriment, some very fresh faces unite at London’s Old Blue Last on Sunday 29th June. Newcomers Grubs (featuring former DIY scribe Jake May) join the supremely talented Oscar and fellow fuzzy sports Junk in a brilliant free get-together.

THE BIG NEU THING:
Body Cheetah - Afrodaisyac

James Kristofik’s Body Cheetah project seems as if it’s always shifting, constantly reinventing on its own terms. A beast that James himself doesn’t fully control, Body Cheetah continually moves into strange and wonderful directions. ‘Afrodaisyac’ is one of his most brooding and hallucinogenic tracks yet, but it’s no less inviting than any of his previous material. Settling into its cushiony, yet somewhat cacophonous bed isn’t easy, but if you allow yourself to get comfortable, it’s likely you’ll find yourself enveloped in its singular atmosphere. [Joe Price]

OTHER NEU BUSINESS:
Tombo Crush - Paper Cuts

Karen O’s not the only artist capable of spilling out lo-fi bedroom recordings with a sweet, intimate quality. This is 41 seconds long, for crying out loud, but already in ‘Paper Cuts’ there’s enough to suggest Tombo Crush - a New Jersey musician - knows a thing or two about creating an up-close-and-personal feeling using bare minimal tools. Hold on to those 40 perfect seconds and pray for more.
