High Hopes - You Were The Future

Disco-tastic project High Hopes is clearly all about expectations being shattered. ‘You Were The Future’, as in, you were a god awful letdown. At least, that’s the indication Fair Ohs member Joe Ryan gives on this progressive, bass-centric taste from a new cassette on Suplex. As it turns out, High Hopes defies expectations in the good way. Packing enough grooves into a 5 minute track to make Metronomy’s Joseph Mount intensely jealous, it bends rules and goes gung ho in the Saturday Night Fever stakes.

London producer Flutter Throngs takes a couple of pages out of the Gold Panda book. Channelling Derwin Panda’s earlier material - all Oriental samples and twitchy beats - ‘Whistleblower’ is an exceptionally sharp dive into an endless pool of mind-expanding electronica. It’s out with the elements, clear as day in its intentions. Yes, there is a whistle. Yep, it’s being blown. But everything else that occurs in the surroundings is what makes ‘Whistleblower’ such an intoxicating listen.
