New music guide The Neu Bulletin (8th July 2014)

DIY dishes out new music tips, including Cyril Hahn and To The Wedding.

The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Some of the music you’ll like, some of it you won’t. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular.

Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery.

THE GIG:
Cyril Hahn - London, Madame Jojo’s

This is a DJ set, granted, but it’s a good time to spot Swiss producer Cyril Hahn showcasing his warped but hard-hitting electronic music in a set that starts just before midnight. Advance tickets are sold out but there are “plenty” on the door.

THE BIG NEU THING:
To The Wedding - Silver Currents

To The Wedding is a new project from San Francisco’s Lauren Grubb, with debut track ‘Silver Currants’ existing somewhere between smoky mountains and the open road. A great, lumbering distinctly American backdrop is countered with vocals that could be coming from the room next door, they’re so up-close and intimate. Space prevails, too - given that this is such an emotional juggernaut of an introduction, it’s never overbearing, which is impressive.

OTHER NEU BUSINESS:
Beach Youth - Days

The Ronsil of all band names, Beach Youth do exactly what they say in the, erm, title. This is throwaway escapism, like footprints in the sand being covered in a layer of frothy sea water. Don’t worry about the consequences, just run into the great unknown. French-tongued and just plain delighted to be alive, ‘Days’ is a giddy number that embraces without a second’s notice. It’s a tail-wagging puppy in need of a cuddle.
