News The Neu Bulletin (28th April 2014)

Playlounge, JiNilsson and The Death of Pop feature in today’s new music guide.

The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Some of the music you’ll like, some of it you won’t. We can’t please everyone, sorry.

Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “big Neu thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery.

THE GIG
Playlounge support Ava Luna - London, Birthdays

Fresh from taking off with ‘pilot’, thrashing duo Playlounge spill more of their magic on a support slot with Brooklyn oddballs Ava Luna, a group who’ll likely embrace Saam Watkins and Laurie Foster’s unhinged take on things.

THE BIG NEU THING
The Death of Pop - Circles (DIY Premiere)

Let’s call this The Death of Pop’s coming of age. First the funeral, now the resurrection. Initially these guys tangled up countless genres - shoegaze, rapturous bedroom punk - and pushed them into a vortex that sounded, well, quite pop. Now they’re arrived with their most streamlined take to date. ‘Circles’ comes coupled with suitably spherical motions, as the James brothers eyeball the camera into dizzying oblivion. This is a special song; a loosely-structured, daring statement. It precedes a new release out later this year.

OTHER NEU BUSINESS
JiNilsson - Heartbreakfree

Simple as it gets, JiNilsson extracts the purity of a great pop song and doesn’t bother throwing in any pointless extra baggage. Shuffling hand claps are a bit Shakira, vocals like a mix between Chairlift’s Caroline Polachek and a world-topping Rihanna. The best thing about ‘Heartbreakfree’? This is just a chancing newcomer from Stockholm, someone on the brink of stardom, doing it completely on her own terms.
