Hookworms, Joanna Gruesome - Cardiff, Undertone


Hookworms’ ‘Pearl Mystic’ debut took off like few could’ve imagined. The general consensus that a record is great doesn’t usually guarantee sales, but for those guys the correlation proved true. Fingers crossed Joanna Gruesome’s eventual first work proper works a similar trick. The two combine tonight in Cardiff.

THE SONG

People actually took the mick when, in our very first Neu Bulletin of 2013, we declared our featured song as potentially one of the defining tracks of the year. Savoir’s ‘Zinli Rhythm’ has since stood firm, a jungle-inhabiting beast of an effort. Mei Swan lent vocals to that track, and ‘dash’, we’re told, is her first attempt at something solo, radio-friendly and less personal. She’s a school of songs to gaze at in wonder but ‘dash’ is a true upping of the game.

This Brighton trap addict seems intent on turning a bright and sugary Easter weekend into a distant memory. How a song with cowbell included within the mix can sound so intensely dark, I have no idea. ‘Tribe ii, i’ is character.’s only song to date; a grand, big-intentioned glow of sadistic noise.
