News The Neu Bulletin (2nd April 2014)
New music tips, featuring BREAU, Tove Lo and MOLD BOY.
The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Some of the music you’ll like, some of it you won’t. We can’t please everyone, sorry.
Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “big Neu thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery.
THE GIG
Tove Lo, Kill J - London, Notting Hill Arts Club
Two very exciting Scandinavian hopes combine tonight. There’s Tove Lo as headliner, turning up to showcase her ‘Truth Serum’ EP. Then there’s Kill J, intriguing new Danish talents whose ‘Bullet’ single showed a serious step up when released last month.
THE BIG NEU THING
MOLD BOY - FADE EP
FADE by MOLD BOY
A new guise / side-project for Alex Calder (the guy who used to share a band with Mac DeMarco as Makeout Videotape), MOLD BOY is responsible for lurking, swampy rock ‘n roll. Half obtuse chords by way of Women, half the same heady, semi-sedated state he tends to bask in, this is the sound of the ultra-talented Calder continuing on a spree.
OTHER NEU BUSINESS
BREAU - Take Your Time EP
Take Your Time EP by BREAU
Sometimes it’s all show and a bunch of nonsense to try and dress up what’s essentially a feeling - BREAU’s debut EP is a collision of ‘beats’, the kind that range from opener ‘Don’t Look Back’’s Jai Paul after a cup of herbal tea mode of chill to ‘Grown Up Adult’’s skewed take on the kind of psych melodies Tame Impala will be dying to grab a piece of. None of this makes sense as an EP. BREAU is just trying things out. And every so often the Toronto artist strikes gold.
