New music guide The Neu Bulletin (2nd September 2014)

DIY’s new music tips include Deers, O. Chapman and Fictonian.

The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Some of the music you’ll like, some of it you won’t. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular. Most of these are Bandcamp finds, big ups from readers or cheeky submissions that pop out of the inbox.

Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery and follow our ‘Listen’-tag for everything new music related.

THE GIG:
Deers - London, Corsica Studios

No question about it: Deers are one of a kind. Their addictive twist on rock ‘n roll isn’t ordinary, but it’s sure to spread like wildfire. With an appearance at Bestival around the corner, tonight the Madrid group make just their second UK appearance. Unmissable.

THE BIG NEU THING:
Fictonian - Full Circle Influence

Details are scarce on Fictonian, but this much is evident from his debut track: He’s a romantic. He keeps his songwriting simple though for an instant fix, smart enough to soothe the snob. And he’s obsessed with his guitar. With a few simple strums and a nifty animated video (up above), he manages to capture the conscience via one fell swoop.

OTHER NEU BUSINESS:
O. Chapman - Discomfort EP

The closest thing these shores have had to Kurt Vile, up to now, has been the studio wizardry of Bristol’s Oliver Wilde. But that’s all changed with O. Chapman, a Brighton musician that has a similar, sleepy-eyed quality about him. Notes are strung out, words creeping into the spotlight. Sometimes it sounds like he’s gurgling, he’s so caught up in the magic of his debut EP ‘Discomfort’. Distractions, daydreams - these are the foundations of his first work.
