New music guide The Neu Bulletin (30th October 2014)

DIY’s daily delivery of new music, featuring Gengahr, Spring King, Ex’s and We Are Z.

The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Some of the music you’ll like, some of it you won’t. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular. Most of these are Bandcamp finds, big ups from readers or cheeky submissions that pop out of the inbox.

Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery and follow our ‘Listen’-tag for everything new music related.

THE GIG:
Gengahr, Spring King, Alvvays, FAMY, Thumpers - London, Bethnal Green WMC

As part of its grand, never-ending (and deservedly so) 10th Birthday celebrations, Transgressive is putting on its ‘New Sounds’ party tonight. There’s the fast-rising Gengahr, stars of the DIY all-dayer Spring King, plus a handful of ace bands who put out their debut album earlier this year: FAMY, Thumpers and the unstoppable Alvvays.

THE BIG NEU THING:
Ex’s - Oh, Boy

It takes just one attention-seizing guitar line to kickstart a career. With ‘Oh, Boy’, the first take from London band Ex’s, this group might have just stumbled upon one first time round. Jammy sods, landing a gem like that on a whim. What’s special about ‘Oh, Boy’ though is where they take this guitar line, sending it into a pit of frenzied destruction, like hearing early Peace given a deadly dose of poison. A special debut.

OTHER NEU BUSINESS:
We Are Z - Airbrush

If Spring King (mentioned above) seem to have a stronghold on unrelentingly rowdy but charming rock ’n roll, it’s about time someone else stepped up to the plate. We Are Z mix sci-fi leanings and falsetto-filled musings with a giddy, barmy swarm of guitars that bring together the collective enthusiasm of a pack of happy yappy puppies. ‘Airbrush’ is out 17th November.
