New music guide The Neu Bulletin (3rd June 2014)
Neu’s new music tips contain Beaty Heart, MUNA and Nature Of.
The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Some of the music you’ll like, some of it you won’t. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular.
Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery.
THE GIG:
Beaty Heart - London, Rough Trade East
Tropical psych pop isn’t in short supply, but the keen melodic nous of Beaty Heart’s a rarer breed. On their debut album ‘Mixed Blessings’ (see DIY’s track-by-track guide here), they live up to years’ worth of potential with a brilliant first effort. See them launch it tonight in East London.
THE BIG NEU THING:
MUNA - Maximum
On LA group MUNA’s opening gambit, the intentionally unpolished ‘more perfect’ EP, they throw everything into the fire. Out sparks a lifetime’s worth of invention, more ideas than flickering embers. ‘Maximum’ sums up their all-everything-ever approach. It’s a song that’d be crippled if it gave anything less, subdued if if stood still for a second. We could be witnessing the start of something very special.
OTHER NEU BUSINESS:
Nature Of
Canadian group Nature Of have been going since 2011 and they call themselves a ‘collective of artists’ in an around the Edmonton area. Together, they’ve come round to their debut full-length, a self-titled waltz through woozy alternative rock and hand-clapping excitability. There’s a mix of deft touches and grand, bolshy choruses. They’ve waited for their moment in the spotlight, now Nature Of look capable of seizing just about anything.
