News The Neu Bulletin (3rd March 2014)
Neu’s Monday dose of new music picks out tracks from The Preatures, bo en and Aleem Khan.
The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Some of the music you’ll like, some of it you won’t. We can’t please everyone, sorry.
Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “big Neu thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery.
THE GIG
The Preatures - Leeds, Brudenell Social Club
Glam-drenched dancehall pop doesn’t come any more satisfying than The Preatures. The Aussie troupe are over in the UK for a handful of dates - they play London’s 100 Club this week - with this stopover in Leeds giving fans instant kicks.
THE BIG NEU THING
Aleem Khan - She’s Fine
She’s Fine by Aleem Khan
Stored up and sweltering underneath a foggy soul filter UMO would be proud of, Aleem Khan’s debut track ‘She’s Fine’ is a late-2013 gem that’s still milling around without a follow-up. The Calgary songwriter/band (it sounds more like the latter) have hooks stuffed into their back-pockets. A glass-like, glistening guitar line sinks into a summer glow, by which time vocals - sounding like a cross between Hayden Thorpe and Vondelpark - rinse the scene. Debut EP ‘A Living’ was meant to be out now, but we’re yet to get wind of it.
OTHER NEU BUSINESS
bo en - money won’t play (feat. aquarius)
Lowercase-styled meta future-pop is a thing now. There’s PC Music spitting out twisted and contorted faux triumphs from Hannah Diamond, and London producer bo en was practically raised in Tokyo shopping centres. Cute as can be, synth tweaks and slab bass paint the picture in in ‘Money Won’t Play’, which features the chirpy vocals of Bromley’s Augustus Bonito. The end result sounds like Toro Y Moi losing his mind - and dollar - on an arcade machine binge.
